About Kunming

Kunming is the capital of Yunnan province, located in south-west China. It has one of the mildest climates in China, with short cool dry winters, and long warm humid summers.
It was important during World War II as a Chinese military center, an American air base.
Kunming is located at an altitude of 1,900 meters above sea level and is just north of the Tropic of Cancer. Some of the attractions in Kunming are the Green Lake Park, the Tang Dynasty Pagodas, the Yuantong Temple, the Minorities Village, and the nearby Western Hills.
On the outskirts of town lies the Golden Temple, a bronze temple, dating from the Ming dynasty.

Kunming has a rich cultural and historical significance

Being located in a mountain valley, Kunming was important as a trade route in the region and often changed hands among empires and kingdoms. Here are Kunming’s history highlights:

  • 109 BCThe Han Empire captured Kunming and gained partial control of the Southern Silk Road.
  • 765 ADThe Nanzhao captured Kuning after rebelling against the Tang Empire.
  • 1253The Mongols captured Kunming.
  • 1910A rail line to Hanoi was built, and Kunming began to modernize and grow.
  • 1937Kunming grew rapidly and industrialized after wealthy businessmen, the Chinese army, and Western air forces made Kunming a major war base against Japan.
